Maysonet, Rohan Lead Cubs to Comeback Win

September 1, 2013

Nashville, TN - Edwin Maysonet delivered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning to tie the game and Greg Rohan belted a home run leading off the 10th to lead the Iowa Cubs (66-77) to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Nashville Sounds (56-87) at Greer Stadium tonight. The Sounds lead this series 2-1, but the Cubs lead the season series 9-6 and have guaranteed a win of the season series over the Sounds for the first time since 2008.

The Cubs had couldn't get their offense going against Sounds' starter Zack Kroenke. The lefty limited the Cubs to three hits over seven shutout innings, didn't walk a batter, and struck out seven. Cubs' starter Justin Grimm was also impressive tonight. He blanked the Sounds through the first five innings before giving up a run in the sixth. With one out, the Sounds got runners to second and third on a walk, a single, and a wild pitch. Former Cub Blake Lalli drove in Kentrail Davis with a base hit to start the scoring.

Zach Rosscup followed Grimm with a scoreless seventh before the Sounds added a run off Brian Schlitter in the eighth. Eugenio Velez led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Josh Prince to extend the Sounds' lead to 2-0. Velez was 3-for-5 in the game. He has 21-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in a league-best 35 consecutive games.

Kyle Heckathorn pitched a perfect eight for Nashville, setting up Dustin Molleken for the save opportunity in the ninth. With one out, Ty Wright singled. After a foulout, Edgar Gonzalez added a base hit and Mike Olt coaxed a walk to load the bases. Maysonet jumped on the first pitch he saw from Molleken and rapped a ground ball single to center field, driving in Wright and Gonzalez to tie the game.

Marcus Hatley retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. The Sounds brought in left-hander Travis Webb and Rohan hit his second pitch off the famous guitar scoreboard in left-center to give the Cubs their first lead of the game. Hatley (3-2) gave up a base hit to Velez to start the bottom of the 10th, but got a double play ball and a strikeout to end the game and earn the win. Webb (2-6) suffered the loss.

The Cubs improved to 2-8 in extra-inning games on the season and won for just the second time this year when trailing after eight innings.

The Cubs and Sounds wrap up this series, and the season, tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 at Greer Stadium. The Cubs will send RH Kyle Hendricks (3-0, 2.38) to the mound against LH Aaron Laffey (6-8, 6.52) for the Sounds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 11:45 am.
