DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (37-47) scored eight runs in the first four innings and held on to beat the Omaha Storm Chasers (47-37) by a score of 12-7, Wednesday at Werner Park.

Iowa scored one run in the second and added another in the third on a solo shot from Nick Martini, his second home run in as many games. Up 2-0, the I-Cubs added on with six runs in the second inning, bringing their lead to 8-0.

The six-run frame was highlighted by singles from Zach Davis and Alfonso Rivas, as well as a two-RBI double from Martini. For the second consecutive outing, Cory Abbott threw three scoreless frames, but ran into trouble after that.

Abbott gave up three runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Ryan McBroom and a two-run blast from MJ Melendez. McBroom struck again in the fifth with an RBI single, cutting Iowa’s lead to 8-4.

Scoreless efforts from Ethan Roberts and Dillon Maples kept the game at 8-4 until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Omaha made it a one-run game with a three-run blast from Rudy Martin.

Iowa finally cashed in some runners, scoring four more runs in the top of the ninth to bring their lead back to five. 12-7 is where the game would stay, as Tony Cingrani struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn Iowa’s second consecutive victory over Omaha.

POSTGAME NOTES:
