DES MOINES, IA – The Toledo Mud Hens (53-51) scored eight runs in the first two innings to defeat the Iowa Cubs (47-58) by a score of 10-6, Sunday at Principal Park.

Hayden Wesneski didn’t have the organizational debut he was hoping for in his first game with Iowa today, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Toledo jumped on him for four runs in the first on a sacrifice fly, an RBI single and a two-run double.

The Mud Hens followed their four-run first with a four-run second, getting a grand slam from Kerry Carpenter to extend their lead to 8-0. On the other side, former Cub Daniel Norris spun four scoreless innings.

Norris allowed just one hit while striking out three, handing the ball off to the bullpen who kept the scoreless streak alive. Zac Houston and Angel De Jesus combined to throw two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The game stayed 8-0 until the eighth when Josh Lester clubbed a two-run shot to make it a 10-0 Mud Hens lead. Iowa ended the shutout with a six-run eighth, however, getting RBI doubles from Trent Giambrone and Narciso Crook as well as an RBI single from Levi Jordan.

Matt Mervis capped off the inning with a three-run blast, his third of the year with Iowa. The comeback fell short, as Nolan Blackwood spun a scoreless ninth to take the game and the series for Toledo.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Nicholas Padilla spun 2.1 scoreless innings of relief today, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. The righty spun 60% (21-of-35) of his pitches for strikes.
