ST. PAUL, MN – The Iowa Cubs (12-24) couldn’t score a run and fell 2-0 to the St. Paul Saints (18-20), Wednesday at CHS Field.

In his third start of the season for Iowa, Matt Swarmer had his best outing of the year, tossing six frames of one-run ball. Swarmer surrendered just four hits and struck out three.

Unfortunately for Iowa, one of those hits Swarmer gave up was a solo home run off the bat of Tomás Telis in the first inning to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Despite giving up five hits, Chandler Shepherd kept Iowa off the board through his five innings of work, striking out three batters along the way. The score would stay 1-0 until the seventh inning, when former Iowa Cub Daniel Descalso doubled against his old team.

Descalso’s double scored Jimmy Kerrigan, growing St. Paul’s lead to two runs, where it would stay. Relievers Ian Hamilton, Juan Minaya and Derek Law would combine to keep Iowa scoreless through the final four frames. They combined to allow just two walks and a hit batter, while striking out three, closing out the Saints’ 2-0 victory over Iowa.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Matt Swarmer became the seventh I-Cub to register a quality start this year. Iowa fell to 2-7 on the year when their starter works six or more innings.

Dee Gordon had two of Iowa’s five total hits, with a single and a double in tonight’s game.

• In his first game with Iowa this season, Trent Giambrone went 1-for-4 with a single as the designated hitter against St. Paul. His single in the fourth inning was the last hit Iowa had in the game.

Iowa and St. Paul face-off tomorrow in game three of the six-game series at CHS Field. First pitch between the two teams is set for 7:05 pm. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
