DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (19-16) capped off their series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (16-19) with an 8-0 victory on Sunday at Principal Park. The win marked their fifth of the series, earning their second series win of the season.

Each of Iowa’s first two hitters walked and came around to score in the first inning on an RBI ground out from Jared Young and an RBI single from Nelson Maldonado. An RBI single from Dixon Machado in the second inning extended Iowa’s lead to 3-0.

With the lead, I-Cubs’ starter Matt Swarmer went to work. The righty spun five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk compared to five strikeouts. Robel Garcia padded the lead in the fifth with a solo home run, his sixth long ball of the series.

Iowa scored four more runs in the sixth, boosting their lead to 8-0. Following Swarmer, Brendon Little, Bryan Hudson and Ben Leeper combined to throw four scoreless frames, completing the shutout win for Iowa.

The three relievers allowed just one hit over their four innings, striking out three along the way to their 8-0 win.

POSTGAME NOTES:

• After his streak of five home runs in four games including at least one in four consecutive games was snapped last night, Robel Garcia hit another solo blast today, giving him six home runs this series.

• After going 3-for-3 last night, Greg Deichmann recorded two more hits today. With his 5-for-7 effort over his last two games, the outfielder is now hitting .208 on the year for Iowa.

• Four players had multi-hit games for Iowa, as the I-Cubs out-hit Omaha 10-3.

• Matt Swarmer earned his third victory of the season today, tied for the team lead. He is now a perfect 3-0 on the season, leading the team in strikeouts with 39.
