Hudson Valley Walks Off Winners, 2-1

June 14, 2014

Wappingers Falls, NY - The Aberdeen IronBirds had a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth, but a Hunter Lockwood two-run home run to left-center gave the host Renegades a walk-off 2-1 win on Opening Day Friday.

Janser Severino had a fantastic start for the IronBirds. He tied a career high with nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits and one walk. He left with the game still scoreless.

Derrick Bleeker came on in relief of Severino in the seventh inning and worked out of a second and third, one out jam to keep the game scoreless.

The IronBirds had chances in each of the first six innings, but were unable to push a run across. That all changed in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases empty, Hector Veloz launched a home run to left field, giving the IronBirds a 1-0 lead.

Bleeker put the Renegades down in order in the eighth.

Aberdeen was able to load the bases in the top of the ninth with two outs, but Cam Kneeland struck out to end the threat and send the game to the bottom of the ninth.

Nik Nowottnick came on for the save and struck out Elias Torres looking to start the frame. After a Bralin Jackson single to center, Hector Montes flew out. With two outs and a runner on first, Hunter Lockwood drilled a game-winning, two run home run to left-center field, giving the Renegades a walk-off 2-1 win.

Nowottnick took the loss, falling to 0-1. Isaac Gil earned the win, pitching one inning, allowing one hit and two walks, striking out two.

The IronBirds will look to even the series tomorrow night, as they will send LHP Stephen Tarpley to the hill. The Renegades will counter with RHP Enderson Franco. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
