TROY, N.Y. - Kicking off a three-game set against Tri-City, the Aberdeen IronBirds defeated the ValleyCats 3-2 to extend their winning streak to five games. Ryan Ripken hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning with his team trailing by a run to lift the IronBirds.
GOOD START: In a 0-0 game in the third, Jean Carrillo produced the game's first run with a single to left field that scored Markel Jones. Jones reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
TOUGH TIMES: Leading by a run in the sixth, Tri-City struck twice on IronBirds miscues to take a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch gave the ValleyCats their first run, a balk with a runner on third broke the tie.
RIPKEN TO THE RESCUE: In the seventh, T.J. Nichting led off with a single to center field and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. After a strikeout, Ryan Ripken stepped to the plate and turned around a Tyler Ivey fastball to right field for his second home run of the year to give the IronBirds a 3-2 advantage.
Joe Johnson worked a scoreless seventh and recorded the first out of the eighth, Max Knutson retired the only man he faced in the eighth, and William Reed Hayes recorded the final four outs to give the IronBirds sole position of first place in the McNamara division.
'BIRD WATCHING: Cameron Ming made the start for the IronBirds, going three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three … The win is the IronBirds fourth of the season when trailing in the seventh or later and their third of that category on the road.
