Vader goes Eight, Fans Ten as Aberdeen wins 5-4 in extras

June 22, 2013

Brooklyn, NY- The Aberdeen IronBirds saw a four run lead dissipate in the bottom of the ninth, but a Kris Richards RBI single scored Jared Breen in the tenth as the IronBirds hung on to beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-4 for the team's first win in 2013.

Sebastian Vader was brilliant. He went eight innings, struck out ten, did not allow a walk, scattering three hits. At one point, he retired thirteen straight Cyclone batters. A Gavin Cecchini single and two Juan Gamboa singles would be the only hits he allowed. He would not factor in the decision, however.

Aberdeen got off to a great start. In the top of the third inning, Scott Kalush worked a leadoff walk. He advanced to second when George Barber was hit by a pitch. Kalush would score two batters later on a Hector Veloz RBI single. The hit not only gave the IronBirds the lead at 1-0, it also extended Veloz's hitting streak to six games.

The IronBirds would do more damage in the seventh. They sent six men to the plate, recorded only one hit, but scored three runs. Manny Hernandez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Kalush followed with a walk. Jeff Kemp then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on an error by L.J. Mazzilli, allowing Hernandez to score. Kalush would score when George Barber grounded into a double play. Breen then earned a two out walk, stole second, and scored on Veloz's second RBI single of the game.

The IronBirds took a 4-0 lead to the bottom of the ninth, but Brooklyn sent nine batters to the plate and was able to tie the game to force extras. In the inning, the Cyclones scored four runs on four hits, and left two on base.

The IronBirds would go ahead for good in the top of the tenth. Breen got hit by a pitch leading off, then stole second. He would score two batters later on a Richards RBI single.

Jorge Rivera got the win for the IronBirds after pitching one and a third of an inning. He allowed two hits, and struck out two. He improved to 1-0. David Wynn took the loss for the Cyclones, dropping to 0-1.

The IronBirds travel to Staten Island tomorrow to play the Yankees. David Richardson will go for the IronBirds, while the Yankees will counter with Phillip Walby. First pitch from Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George is set for 4:00 p.m.
