John Mayberry Jr. to Rehab with IronPigs
Phillies OF John Mayberry Jr. - sidelined since July 21 with left wrist inflammation - is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment when the IronPigs travel to Pawtucket to begin a four-game series against the Paw Sox on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network is the exclusive sponsor of all Major League rehabilitation appearances at Coca-Cola Park.
Mayberry Jr., 30, was hitting .213 with 6 homers and 21 RBIs in 63 games prior to sustaining the injury last month. During his six-year MLB career (all with the Phillies), he has hit .242 with 52 home runs and 169 RBIs while appearing in exactly 500 games. He was initially acquired by the Phillies from the Texas Rangers in a trade for Greg Golson on Nov. 20, 2008.
Mayberry made 89 starts for the Phillies in 2013, getting starts at every outfield position as well as first base. Uniquely, he became the first player in Major League history to hit two home runs in extra innings in one game with one of them being a grand slam when he completed the feat on June 4, 2013 against Miami. In 2012, he established career highs in games (149), at-bats (441), runs (53), hits (108), doubles (24), walks (34), extra-base hits (38) and total bases (174).
A Kansas City, Mo. native, Mayberry made an Opening Day roster for the first time in his career in 2011 and had a game-winning, walk-off pinch RBI single on Opening Day against Houston.
After being acquired by the Phillies, Mayberry spent parts of three seasons with the IronPigs and established himself as one of the top hitters in the history of the franchise. His 32 career home runs in an IronPigs uniform ranks 3rd in franchise history behind just Andy Tracy (69) and Cody Overbeck (39).
Mayberry was originally selected by Texas in the 1st round (19th overall) in the 2005 June draft after a standout career at Stanford University.
