Isotopes End Season with Win

September 2, 2013

METAIRIE, La. -- Matt Angle hit a two-run home run into the hot tub at Zephyr Field and the Albuquerque Isotopes closed out the 2013 season Monday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs.

The Isotopes end the season with a record of 76-68, in second place in the PCL's American Southern division, six games out of first place, and three games ahead of third-place Round Rock.

Matt Magill (6-2) allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings for the victory. He struck out three and walked one. Onelki Garcia pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Blake Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth.

Eliezer Alfonzo had three hits, including a run-scoring double in the first inning. Angle's home runs came in the third inning, his eighth of the season, and extended the Topes lead to 3-1.

In the top of the ninth, Albuquerque added an important insurance run. Justin Sellers reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, then scored on Damaso Espino's single to center for a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Skipworth hit a one-out solo home run to make it 4-3. With two outs, Chris Valaika grounded to short, but Justin Sellers' throwing error extended the season for one more batter. Javy Guerra struck out Jordan Brown to end the game, preserve the victory, and close out the 2013 campaign.
