JACKSON, Tenn - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, were tied in knots by Tyler Wells and the Chattanooga Lookouts on Friday evening, submitting to a 4-1 defeat at The Ballpark at Jackson.

The series-evening victory by Chattanooga (64-70) means Jackson (73-63) can do no more than tie the Lookouts in the season series, which they presently trail 10-7.
Chattanooga right-hander Tyler Wells (2-2, 1.65 ERA) flustered the Generals' offense through 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight men while allowing only one run. The Generals went 0-for-6 with men in scoring position on the evening, breaking through only with a two-out RBI double in the fifth by Jason Morozowski that scored Marty Herum from first base. After that, a parade of left-handed relievers named Casey Crosby, Tyler Jay, and Devin Smeltzer (S, 3) shut down the Jackson offense, as the Generals' August record fell to 15-13. The 2.8 runs per game average for Jackson in August is their lowest of any 2018 month.
Taylor Widener (5-8, 2.75 ERA) needed 78 pitches to get through the first three innings, recording only one flyball out despite maintaining the league's highest rate of fly balls in 2018. Widener struck out five while allowing five hits and three walks with a pair of earned runs, upping his season-long strikeout total to 176, the second-highest total in Minor League Baseball.
In relief, Tyler Mark delivered a pair of scoreless frames, but then he permitted the first three hitters in the sixth inning to reach base, including the allowance of an RBI double to Jimmy Kerrigan. Miguel Aguilar replaced Mark and promptly gave up a sacrifice fly to let in a fourth Chattanooga run, with both of the last two tallies charged to Mark. Aguilar, Bud Jeter, and Yoan López completed the final four innings without any runs scored on them. The Generals' 2.77 August ERA is their lowest since April.
