Jackson, Tenn. - In front of 4,239 on Pirates & Princesses Night presented by Leaders Credit Union, the Jackson Generals downed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 3-1 Saturday night. Joel Payamps turned in another strong start before the fourth-largest crowd of 2017 at The Ballpark at Jackson.
The only blemish (3-1, 4.11) against Payamps came in the top of the opening inning. With two outs and nobody on, Brian Anderson hit a solo homer to put the Shrimp up 1-0. Over six innings, Payamps gave up just one run on five hits while striking out six and walking one. The right-hander has given up just two runs over 13 innnings his last two starts.
Jackson (2-1, 39-34) backed him up with ten hits on offense. The Generals got to Mike Kickham (4-4, 2.43) in the third inning to tie the game and then take the lead. Evan Marzilli singled with one out and swiped second, coming home on a double to center by Colin Walsh. Two batters later, Domingo Leyba made it 2-1 with a single to center.
The Generals added to their lead in the sixth inning. With one out and the bases empty, Dawel Lugo launched a home run over the high fence in left field to put Jackson on top 3-1. Both Lugo and Leyba had a pair of hits, leading the way for the offense on Saturday.
Jacksonville (1-2, 31-42) couldn't do anything after Anderson's first-inning homer. After Payamps, three Jackson relievers combined to finish off the game. Mason McCullough struck out a pair in a scoreless seventh, his Double-A debut. Yuhei Nakaushiro pitched the eighth, getting the ball to Gabriel Moya in the ninth. Moya (S, 11) allowed a double, but worked a scoreless frame to record his 11th save in as many opportunities. The lefty has not allowed a run since May 1.
