Early lead not enough in Jacksonville’s 6-5 loss to Durham

DURHAM, N.C. – Willians Astudillo homered but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp couldn’t overcome good pitching from the Durham Bulls in a 6-5 loss Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Jacksonville (60-50) regained the lead in the top of the third. Brian Miller led off with a walk and two batters later Jesús Sánchez reached on a fielder’s choice. With runners at first and second Astudillo (12) clubbed a three-run home run off Durham (61-49) reliever Cooper Criswell (W, 1-0).

The Bulls took their final lead in the bottom of the third. René Pinto doubled and scored on a two-run home run from Tristan Gray (28) putting Durham ahead 6-5.

The Jumbo Shrimp opened the scoring in the top of the first. Miller singled and scored on a double from Jordan Groshans. Three batters later, Astudillo drove in Groshans with a single, giving Jacksonville a 2-0 advantage.

Durham came up slugging in the bottom of the first. Xavier Edwards walked and went to second on a single from Manuel Margot. With two runners on, Jonathan Aranda singled to score Edwards and cut the deficit to 2-1. Margot went to third and then scored on a single from Josh Lowe. Following a double play, Tristan Gray drove in the go-ahead run with another single, putting the Bulls ahead 3-2.

The lead grew for Durham in the bottom of the third. With one out, Edwards doubled and then scored on a single from Aranda, making the lead 4-2.

Jacksonville and Durham conclude their series tomorrow with first pitch slated for 5:05 p.m. Coverage begins at 4:50 p.m. ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.
