Jumbo Shrimp fall to M-Braves 11-2

Miller drives in run in Jacksonville debut

PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (0-1, 28-41) fell to the Mississippi Braves (1-0, 30-41) by a 11-2 score in the first game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Thursday night.

Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Cody Poteet (2-8) took the loss, allowing a season-high 10 runs (all earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Mississippi right-handed starting pitcher Kyle Wright (4-7) earned the victory, his first at home this season, going seven innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
The M-Braves started the scoring in the bottom of the second with a two-run triple by Luis Marté to lead 2-0. Jacksonville battled back in the top of the third, with Marlins No. 10 prospect Brian Miller collecting an RBI single for his first Double-A hit in his Southern League debut, then Peter O'Brien tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single.
Mississippi responded in the bottom of the third with an eight run inning against Poteet. The inning featured RBI doubles by Travis Demeritte and Alex Jackson to build the lead to 4-2, before Brandon Downes powered a two-run single to grow the lead to 6-2. After Marte's RBI single, the pitcher Wright drove in two runs with a triple to put the lead at 9-2. The final run of the rally came in when Alay Lago brought in a run on a fielder's choice to put the lead at 10-2.
Jumbo Shrimp right-handed relief pitcher Reilly Hovis turned in two scoreless innings in his Double-A debut, keeping the Braves off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth. The Braves added to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, when Connor Lien hit an RBI single off Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Miguel Del Pozo to put the lead at 11-2, which would be the final score.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves will continue their series with the second game of the five-game series on Friday night at Trustmark Park at 8 p.m. eastern. Jacksonville right-hander Max Duval (1-6, 6.53 ERA) will start for the Jumbo Shrimp against Mississippi right-hander Bryse Wilson (1-4, 5.90 ERA). The Jumbo Shrimp return home Thursday, June 28, to begin a six-game series with the Montgomery Biscuits on Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, with $1 12-oz. and $2 24-oz. beers at select locations, plus $1 sodas at the main concession stands. The game is Teacher Appreciation Night.
