JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Miami Marlins announced Thursday that right-handed relief pitcher Cole Sulser has been assigned to Jacksonville to continue an injury rehabilitation assignment. Sulser is expected to pitch for the Jumbo Shrimp against the Memphis Redbirds during their series over the weekend at 121 Financial Ballpark.

Sulser was placed on the 15-day IL on June 15 due to a right lat strain. Thus far in 2022, Sulser has pitched 26 games with the Miami Marlins, going 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA, fanning 26 against 10 walks in 23.1 innings. The 32-year-old began his rehab stint with Low-A Jupiter, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings over two scoreless appearances.

Originally selected by Cleveland in the 25th round of the 2013 draft out of Dartmouth College, pitched in the Guardians’ organization through 2018, reaching as high as Triple-A Columbus. He was traded along with infielder Yandy Díaz to the Tampa Bay Rays. After spending most of the 2019 campaign with Triple-A Durham, Sulser made his major league debut for Tampa Bay on September 6, 2019 against Toronto, throwing 1.0 scoreless inning.

A native of Santa Ysabel, Calif., Sulser was claimed off waivers on October 1, 2019 by the Baltimore Orioles. He worked to a 3.45 ERA across 79 games with the O’s in both 2020 and 2021 before getting dealt to Miami along with left-hander Tanner Scott on April 3, 2022 for a draft pick, left-hander Antonio Velez and outfielder Kevin Guerrero and a player to be named later.

Sulser is the eighth player in 2022 to join Jacksonville on a rehab assignment, following LHP Richard Bleier (May 22), RHP Dylan Floro (April 30-May 9), third baseman Brian Anderson (June 23-June 27), infielder Joey Wendle (June 25-June 30), RHP Cody Poteet (July 8-July 12), LHP Jesús Luzardo (July 22-July 27), and RHP Edward Cabrera (July 28).
