Wahoos Sweep Shrimp in Doubleheader 2-0, 11-4

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-37) were swept by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (36-24) in a doubleheader 2-0 and 11-4 to close out the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night.


PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (23-37) were swept by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (36-24) in a doubleheader 2-0 and 11-4 to close out the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Thursday night.

After winning Sunday's first game of the series 9-6 in 10 innings, the Wahoos won the final four games of the series, and the Shrimp were 2-8 against the Wahoos in Pensacola in 2019. Both games featured rain delays, with the first contest delayed by 42 minutes at the start, and the second contest by 44 minutes at the start.

Game One - Blue Wahoos defeat Jumbo Shrimp 2-0

Pensacola won the first seven-inning contest by a 2-0 score. Pensacola right-handed starting pitcher Andro Cutura (1-2) earned the win by pitching six scoreless innings where he allowed two hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Sixto Sanchez (1-2) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts during his five innings of work. Pensacola left-handed relief pitcher Sam Clay earned his fifth save of the year by working a scoreless top of the seventh.

Pensacola took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run to left by Michael Davis. An inning later in the bottom of the third, Jaylin Davis reached on a fielding error by Jacksonville second baseman Justin Twine that scored Travis Blankenhorn to give the Wahoos a 2-0 lead, which would be the final.

Brian Miller finished Game One 0-for-3 at the plate, ending his hitting streak at 16 games, which has been the longest hitting streak in all of Double-A baseball this season.

Game Two - Blue Wahoos defeat Jumbo Shrimp 11-4

Pensacola won the second seven-inning contest by an 11-4 score. Pensacola right-handed relief pitcher Williams Ramirez (4-1) earned the win, while Jacksonville right-handed relief pitcher Tyler Stevens (1-1) took the loss.

The Wahoos built their lead with single runs in the first and second innings off Jacksonville left-handed starting pitcher Daniel Castano to lead 2-0 after the first two innings. Jacksonville responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Justin Twine delivered an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game, then later in the inning he scored on a passed ball by Pensacola catcher Brian Navarreto to tie the game at 2-2.

The Wahoos responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run triple by Michael Davis, his second triple of the game, to retake the lead 4-2. Also in the bottom of the fourth Joe Cronin added a three-run home run to grow the Wahoos lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pensacola added a three-run home run by Caleb Hamilton and a two-run homer by Navarreto to grow the lead to 11-2. Jacksonville scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth with Twine recording an RBI double, and an RBI single by Bryson Brigman to put the score at 11-4, which would be the final.
