Bandes earns second Appy League Player of the Week

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Appalachian League announced Monday that Johnson City Cardinals 1B Luis Bandes has been named the circuit's Player of the Week for the time period between July 31-August 6. This is the 21-year-old's second weekly honor this year, earning the award for during the week of July 10-16, as well.
In five games this week, Bandes led the Appy League in home runs (4), total bases (22), slugging percentage (1.048) and OPS (1.569). In addition, the 21-year-old slugger was tied for second in the league in RBI (9), third in hits (10), fifth in batting average (.476) and ninth in on-base percentage (.522). 
The award is the second of Bandes' five-year professional career. He is the first Cardinal player to win multiple weekly awards since LHP Ian McKinney won Pitcher of the Week twice in the first three weeks of the 2014 campaign. Bandes is also the first Johnson City player to win a pair of Player of the Week honors in a single season since INF Philip Cerreto in 2010.
Bandes is in his second season with Johnson City and entering tonight the Venezuelan swinger sits third in the Appy League in slugging percentage (.575), tied for third in runs batted in (32) and ninth in batting average (.339). Overall, Bandes has 43 hits, 17 runs scored, nine doubles and seven home runs in 32 games for the Redbirds.
Last season with the Cardinals, Bandes batted just .231 (36-156) with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI in 44 games for the eventual league champions.
