Hader named Cal League's top pitcher

Lefty joins Peña, Kemp and Hernandez as postseason all-stars
August 23, 2014

LANCASTER, Calif. - Josh Hader has been named the California League's Pitcher of the Year, the league announced Friday when it released its 2014 Field Awards and Postseason All-Star Team.

Hader joins JetHawks catcher Roberto Peña, former second baseman Tony Kemp and former outfielder Teoscar Hernandez on the Postseason All-Star Team.

Hader, 20, becomes the first pitcher to earn the Cal League's top honor in the JetHawks 19-year history. He leads the Cal League in ERA (2.70), WHIP (1.10) and is sixth in strikeouts (112). The left-hander put up a record of 9-2 before his promotion to AA Corpus Christi in early August.

Roberto Peña has been named the league's Postseason All-Star catcher. The backstop has thrown out 54% (46-for-85) of potential base stealers this season, almost 15% better than the next best percentage in the league. The 22-year-old has been a steady offensive force with 11 home runs and 49 RBIs on year.

Despite being called up to AA Corpus Christi just days after the All-Star Break, Tony Kemp has been named the league's Postseason All-Star second baseman. Kemp led the league in OBP, OPS, hits and runs at the time of his mid-season call up. His mark of 79 runs scored in 72 games still led the circuit a month after his promotion. Kemp still leads the JetHawks with a .336 average and .433 OBP.

Teoscar Hernandez has been named one of the league's three Postseason All-Star outfielders. The 21-year-old was promoted to AA Corpus Christi on the same day as Hader but racked 17 home runs in 75 RBIs (both tops on the club) beforehand. Hernandez also put up 33 doubles, eight triples and stole 31 bases.

All four honorees were members of the Cal League's mid-season All-Star Team as well.
