RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - Trey Killian tossed six strong innings and Roberto Ramos went 4-for-4, but Victor Roache broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer to lead off the eighth and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes knocked off the JetHawks, 4-1, on Thursday night at LoanMart Field.
The JetHawks now lead the Quakes by one game in the South Division with three to play in the first half. They have to win two in order to take the division outright. If the two teams end tied, there will be a one-game playoff to open the second half on Thursday night at The Hangar in Lancaster.
Killian struck out a season-high eight and allowed just one run on six hits. The run came in the opening inning on an RBI infield single by Omar Estevez.
The JetHawks tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single by Mylz Jones, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Garrett Hampson also extended his streak to 11 and Brendan Rodgers went 2-for-5 with a triple to move his streak up to 23 games. Rodgers is hitting .404 this season to lead all of Minor League Baseball.
The game remained tied until Roache's blast off Logan Cozart to open the bottom of the seventh. It was the fifth home run for Roache in just his 11th game with Rancho Cucamonga.
The Quakes added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth against Cozart. Luke Raley led off with a home run, his eighth of the season. Will Smith later delivered an RBI double.
Adam Bray started for the Quakes and took a no-decision, allowing one runs on seven hits in five innings. Ivan Vietez (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief. Michael Boyle threw a scoreless eighth and Andrew Istler recorded the save, his seventh.
The JetHaws out-hit the Quakes, 11-10. They went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.
The series continues on Friday night at LoanMart Field. Right-hander Peter Lambert (4-6) will start for Lancaster against right-hander Yadier Álvarez (1-3). First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
