PULASKI, Va. - The Johnson City Cardinals won for the first time in extra innings this season Monday at Calfee Park, downing the Yankees 6-3 in 10 frames. Aaron Antonini and Jhon Torres each went deep to spur the 19th comeback win of the season for the Cards.
Jake Sommers got the start for Johnson City and worked through four walks to limit the Yankees to two runs through five innings. He struck out five. The Cardinals boarded just three men through six before Antonini and Torres went deep on back-to-back pitches to open the seventh vs. Yankee starter Leonardo Pestana. The homer was the fifth of the year for Antonini. Torres now has six homers this season and two in the series.
Mateo Gil singled to open the final frame of regular play vs. Yankees relief man Hayden Wesneski. He would come in to score on a Yankees error to give the Cards a 3-2 lead.
Dylan Pearce bridged the sixth through the eighth for the Cardinals on the mound, holding the Yankees scoreless by stranding three. In the ninth, he allowed a double and recorded a strikeout before handing the ball to John Witkowski. Witkowski took the Yankees down to their last out before allowing a game-tying pinch hit single by Chad Bell to equal the score at 3-3.
The Cardinals struck for three runs in the top of the tenth beginning with designated runner Liam Sabino scoring on an error by Yankee closer Nelson L. Alvarez (2-1). Gil added an RBI single before scoring himself on an RBI double by Torres. Witkowski (4-0) left two aboard to seal the win in the bottom of the tenth.
The Cardinals were outhit 9-7. The win was the seventh this season for the team when an opponent records more hits. Gil finished with three hits. Antonini also caught two runners stealing from behind the plate.
