Heaney, Realmuto Earn Weekly Southern League Honors

Heaney Pitcher of the Week, Realmuto Player of the Week
April 21, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns swept this week's Southern League honors, as left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney was named the league's Pitcher of the Week, while catcher J.T. Realmuto was named the league's Player of the Week from April 14-20, announced by Minor League Baseball on Monday.

During the week, Heaney went 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his two starts at Chattanooga and yesterday against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field. Against Chattanooga he fired six scoreless innings, striking out five batters and allowing only one hit as the Suns won 4-0. Yesterday against the Blue Wahoos he tied a career-high by working seven innings and also tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, allowing only one run on three hits and he walked no batters as he took a no decision.

Heaney this season is 2-0 with a 1.48 ERA through his first four starts and 24 and a third innings on the mound. Heaney, a 2012 first round (ninth overall) selection by the Marlins out of Oklahoma State, is listed by Baseball America as Miami's No. 1 prospect in addition to being the top left-handed pitching prospect in baseball.

Realmuto picks up the league's Player of the Week honor after batting .500 (12-for-24) over the last six games with seven RBI to go along with 10 runs scored, three doubles, and three stolen bases. Realmuto is currently riding a five-game hitting streak, and he has had multi-hit games in five of those contests.

Realmuto is hitting .333 with two homers and a team-best 12 RBI to begin the season. Realmuto, a Southern League All-Star with the Suns in 2013, is listed by Baseball America as Miami's No. 10 prospect, as well as the "best defensive catcher" in the organization. Realmuto was slected by the Marlins in the third round of the 2010 draft out of Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Okla.

The Suns have won three of the first four weekly Southern League honors. In addition to this week's accolades for Heaney and Realmuto, last week Brady Shoemaker was the Southern League Player of the Week for the period of April 3-13.
