PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (5-6) fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (8-3) by a 3-1 score in the first game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Monday night.
Pensacola right-handed starter Tyler Mahle (3-0) earned the victory by allowing a run on three hits with two walks and a season-high seven strikeouts in his five innings of work. Jacksonville left-handed starter Dillon Peters (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts during his inning and two-third innings of work that were cut short due to injury. Geoff Broussard earend the save with a perfect ninth inning, and the Jumbo Shrimp didn't score in the four innings against the Blue Wahoos bullpen.
The Jumbo Shrimp took the game's first lead in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded David Vidal ripped a single into left field to score Alex Glenn to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Wahoos tied the game on an RBI single by Aristides Aquino to even the score at one, then an error by shortstop Alex Yarbrough brought in Gabriel Guerrero to put the Wahoos up 2-1.
In the top of the second, a line drive off the bat of Wahoos shortstop Blake Trahan hit Peters on either his left hand or wrist and he had to leave the game due to injury. Jumbo Shrimp lefty reliever James Buckelew took over on the mound, and turned in the next four and a third innings in scoreless fashion to keep the contest a one-run game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Pensacola's Brian O'Grady led off the inning with a solo homer to right field off Shrimp reliever Greg Nappo to put the score at 3-1, which would be the final. Tyler Kinley added an eighth inning of scoreless relief.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Blue Wahoos will continue their series with the second game of the five-game series at 7:35 p.m. ET. Left-handed pitcher Matt Tomshaw (1-1, 1.80 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Pensacola right-hander Luis Castillo (1-0, 1.38 ERA).
