Suns End Generals Series With 7-6 Win

Game two of scheduled doubleheader cancelled due to rain
May 4, 2013

The Jacksonville Suns won game one of a scheduled doubleheader against the Jackson Generals by a final of 7-6, then had the nightcap cancelled due to rain in the Jackson, Tenn. area.

As was the case with the two team's cancelled game from Friday, the nixed contest will not be made up, ending the season series between the Suns and Generals.

In game one, the Suns jumped out to an early lead, and then watched it disappear before ultimately rallying to take the opener of the doubleheader. Christian Yelich staked Jacksonville to the early advantage with his first career Double-A home run, a two-run shot off Anthony Fernandez that gave the Suns a 2-0 lead in the third.

After Steven Proscia delivered an RBI single for the Generals in the bottom of the third to cut the Suns' lead in half, Audy Ciriaco hit his fourth long ball of the season with Danny Black on base to give Jacksonville a 4-1 advantage.

Ciriaco drove in another run with a single in the top of the fifth before the Generals rallied against Suns starter Adam Conley (1-1) in the bottom half. Vinnie Catricala's three-run double brought the Generals within a run, Jack Marder's single to center tied it, and an error by Black allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Trailing 6-5, Jacksonville wasted no time retaking the lead in the top of the sixth and giving Conley his first Southern League win. Facing reliever Jonathan Arias, Yelich walked to begin the rally. Two batters later, Derek Dietrich homered over the right field wall to put the Suns back in front 7-6.

Scott McGough worked two scoreless innings in the bottom of the sixth and seventh to earn his first save in 2013.

The second game, at first scheduled to begin approximately 7:45 p.m. ET, was at first delayed and then finally cancelled due to the threat of persistent rain and soggy field conditions at the Ballpark in Jackson.

The Suns (16-11) will return home Tuesday after two days off to begin a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in the "Battle for the Golden Skillet." The starters for the series opener on Tuesday have not yet been announced for either team.

Suns fans can listen to Tuesday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM, or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
