Strong pitching and a productive offense led the Hammerheads to a near-no-hit, shutout win over the Bradenton Marauders in the series opener Tuesday night.
On the mound, lefty Braxton Garrett dealt his best-career start. The 2016 1st round pick pitched seven full innings with just one narrow hit and no runs. The Marlins #7 Prospect struck-out a career-high eleven batters and only walked one in his sensational start.
James Nelson helped close out Garrett's outing with an impressive 5-3 ground out play to finish off the seventh inning.
The Hammerheads had a lot of success at-bat as well. They notched 17 hits on the night, with several batters having notable success at the plate.
In his return to the Jupiter Hammerheads, outfielder Tristan Pompey went 4-5 with a double. Micah Brown stood out as well, going 3-4 with a solo homerun. Nelson also had three hits and Bryson Brigman went 2-4 with two of the three Hammerheads runs. Lazaro Alonso hit the only other RBI with a hard-hit single in the fifth. The third run was scored on a balk.
The Hammerheads had luck at the plate, but often struggled to cross the plate. With seventeen hits, the Hammerheads finished the night with just three runs and left fourteen on base. The Marauders impressive fielding combined with the fact that fifteen of those seventeen hits were singles made it difficult to convert most of the hits to runs.
Still, with Garrett's incredible start and only two hits in the Marauder's box score, three runs was plenty to take home the win.
The Hammerheads continue the series tomorrow night at 6:30pm in Jupiter at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. For tickets, visit
