Following a remarkable performance from left-handed pitcher Will Stewart on Friday Night, the Jupiter Hammerheads beat the Lakeland Flying Tigers 5-0.
Stewart, a 21-year-old pitcher acquired in the 2019 trade with Philadelphia, stunned on the mound. For over seven innings, the lefty was on pace for a no-hitter. He faced and retired 21 batters before taking the mound in the eighth. With two outs, another hitless inning seemed within reach, but a double broke up his no-hit bid.
Stewart showed noticeable command on the mound, dominating the strike zone to rack up the outs inning after inning. His numbers and strike reflected his skill, as he dealt 96 pitches with 65 strikes.
Offensively, the Hammerheads also showed up to the plate. Lazaro Alonso batted in Tristan Pompey in the first to start the game. In the third, Cameron Baranek and Jose Devers both recorded RBI singles. Then, James Nelson hit a huge solo homerun into left to increase the lead to 4-0. Connor Grant's single in the bottom of the seventh helped secure the game by giving the 'Heads their 5-0 lead.
At the end of his pitching stent, Stewart threw 7 2/3 innings with one hit, one walk and seven strikeouts. Not surprisingly, Stewart earned the win for the night.
The Hammerheads go into tomorrow's game up 1-0 in the series against Lakeland. First pitch is at 5:30 PM at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. For tickets and more information go RogerDeanChevroletStadium.com.
