KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Despite tossing an impressive 13 strikeouts as a unit, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers fell short in Tuesday’s series opener, losing 5-3 to the Salem Red Sox at Atrium Health Ballpark.

LHP Jonah Scolaro (L, 0-1) tossed his first start of 2022, striking out eight Red Sox despite allowing four runs on five hits, walking two along the way. RHP Tyson Messer finished out the fourth inning in relief, helping Kannapolis keep it a four-run lead for Salem.

The Red Sox wasted no time in opening the scoring, taking a 1-0 lead on a Brainer Bonaci home run in the bottom of the first inning with nobody out. Two batters later, Chase Meidroth crushed his first hit in Low-A baseball for his first homer to extend the Red Sox lead to 2-0.

Errors cost the Ballers two runs in total, with the first of the pair coming in the third inning on a pickoff error from Scolaro, allowing Eddinson Paulino to cross the plate and push Salem to a 3-0 advantage.

Kier Meredith kept the party going for the Red Sox in the fourth inning with an RBI single, putting the visitors ahead 4-0.

The second error costing Kannapolis came from Victor Torres in the seventh inning, pushing the Red Sox ahead even more at 5-0 in the seventh inning.

Wes Kath put the Ballers on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning, crushing his eleventh home run of the season, a three-run shot to score James Beard and Andy Atwood. Kath’s homer cut Salem’s lead to 5-3, but the Red Sox held on and got the win in the series opener.
