HAGERSTOWN, MD - Committing two errors in the first inning and allowing Hagerstown to hit for the cycle in the same frame, Kannapolis dropped game three of the four-game series, 5-1, Thursday night in Hagerstown.
In the first, leadoff hitter Cody Wilson (3) sent the second pitch of his at-bat with Kade McClure (L, 1-3) over the center field wall, giving Hagerstown (21-25) an early 1-0 lead. Next up, Justin Connell reached on a fielding error by first baseman Amado Nunez, scoring two batters later after a Jacob Rhinesmith triple (3) to right field.
Up 2-0, Suns' Nic Perkins singled on a groundball through the right side, scoring Rhinesmith easily from third base. After a mound visit from pitching coach José Bautista, Kyle Marinconz doubled (10) to center field, putting runners at second and third base with one out.
After a pop-out in the infield, Jose Sanchez scored Perkins and Marinconz thanks to a fielding error by third baseman Luis Curbelo, giving the Suns a 5-0 lead.
Following the long first inning for McClure on the mound, the right-handed pitcher out of the University of Louisville settled in, spreading four base runners for the Suns over the next five innings. McClure finished with three strikeouts and despite allowing five runs, only two runs were earned.
Wilber Perez took over for McClure in the seventh, striking out two while allowing just two baserunners over the last two innings.
In the eighth, Ian Dawkins doubled (17) on a well-struck ball to center field and then moved up another 90 feet to third base after Lenyn Sosa reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jose Sanchez. One batter later, Romy Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Dawkins for the Intimidators first and only run.
Jonathan Stiever (3-3, 4.59 ERA) will look to even the series for the Intimidators (20-26) in game four Friday night in Hagerstown at 7:05 p.m. against the Suns' Tomas Alastre (3-3, 5.89 ERA).
