KANNAPOLIS, N.C- Just days after being selected to represent the Kannapolis Intimidators in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game, Ian Dawkins has been named the Uncle Ray's SAL Player of the Month for the month of May.
In May, Dawkins batted .419 from the right side of the plate in 31 games and 117 at-bats. Leading the team in all three of those categories, Dawkins also led the team in runs (24), hits (49), doubles (11), OBP (.473), SLG (.564) and OPS (1.037).
Currently on a 19-game hitting streak and a 30-game on-base streak, Dawkins used his surge in the month of May to propel himself to the top of the hit's column in the league with 79. The former Sacramento State outfielder is second in the league in hitting with a .350 average and is tied for first in the league with 21 doubles (tied with teammate, Lenyn Sosa).
The 27th round pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft collected 15 multi-hit games in the month and now has a team-high 21 multi-hit games this season. Dawkins' best day at the plate came on May 9 at Lexington, as the leadoff hitter went 5-for-6 with a home run, two RBI, three runs scored and eight total bases.
Dawkins has had 15 games where he has reached base safely three or more times and only seven games where he has not reached base safely at all.
To put a little icing on the cake for the starting left fielder in the All-Star Game, Dawkins is the only player in the SAL that is top-10 in stolen bases that has a success rate above 80% (15-18, 6 in May).
Fun Fact: Dawkins' favorite flavor of the Official Potato Chip of Minor League Baseball is BBQ.
