KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (28-37) defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers (41-25) on Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health, thanks to a season-high 14 runs on 14 hits.
There was no shortage of runs in this game and both teams got started with the bats early.
In the top of the first inning, Greensboro used a home run from the South Atlantic League's leader Mason Martin (17) to take an early 2-0 lead.
Without getting a single hit, Kannapolis was able to come back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Eight straight balls put Ian Dawkins and Lenyn Sosa on base, and then a fielding error brought Romy Gonzalez aboard to load the bases. Alex Destino walked to bring in Dawkins, and then Bryce Bush grounded out to bring in Sosa and level things at 2-2.
The bottom of the second was when the real damage was done. Jhoandro Alfaro and Dawkins singled early in the inning. Sosa singled to bring in Beltre, Destino grounded out to score Dawkins, and Bush singled to bring in Sosa to put Kannapolis up 5-2. This set the table for Corey Zangari to come to the plate with two on and two out. He launched a 400+ foot home run (5) over the club houses in left field, scoring Gonzalez and Bush to extend the lead to 8-2.
In the top of the third, Greensboro got two runs back. Martin doubled to score Lolo Sanchez, and Rodolfo Castro grounded out and scored Fabricio Macias to bring the score to 8-4. In the bottom of the frame, Kannapolis got two more of their own. Romy Gonzalez hit his first of two doubles on the night and scored Alfaro and Sosa to make things 10-4.
Sam Long got the start for the Intimidators and his night came to an end after five innings, his final line read as: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 K, BB. Lane Ramsey came in for relief.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Kannapolis bats struck again. Ian Dawkins notched his 23rd multi-hit game of the season and was driven in along with Beltre on Gonzalez's second double of the night to tie the season-high in runs at 12. A Destino single later brought in Sosa and Gonzalez to set a season record of 14 runs and make things 14-4.
Ramsey pitched two scoreless innings, and Kannapolis surprisingly didn't score any runs in a couple innings to bring us to the eighth inning. Tyler Watson gave up two runs in the top of the eighth to allow Greensboro to cut the lead to 14-6.
Neither side was able to bring any more runs across the rest of the way, as Kannapolis took the series opener 14-6 with 14 hits.
The Intimidators will continue their series against the Grasshoppers Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Jason Bilous (2-3, 2.48 ERA) will be on the mound for Kannapolis.
