KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers (27-23, 71-48) jumped on the board in the first and never looked back against the Kannapolis Intimidators Tuesday night, taking game two of the four-game series 2-0 at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
After getting the first batter of the ball game to pop up to him on the mound, Sam Long (L, 6-5) allowed back-to-back singles to Jonah Davis and Ji-hwan Bae to put runners at first and second for Fabricio Macias. It took only four pitches for Long to sit down Macias for his first strikeout of the night. After the punchout for out number two, Luke Mangieri singled on a soft fly ball with two strikes into right field, scoring Davis.
Up 1-0 and with runners at the corners, Mangieri stole second base, as the throw from catcher Gunnar Troutwine to second base allowed Bae to score the second run of the ball game for Greensboro.
Long got himself into some more trouble in the second inning but pitched himself out of the jam. After walking the first two batters on 10 total pitches, Long induced two flyouts and groundout to second base to put away the Greensboro threat in the second.
In the bottom half of the second, Kannapolis (25-26, 53-65) had one of their best opportunities to score. After a strikeout for Romy Gonzalez, Tyler Osik and Gunnar Troutwine both singled against Alex Manasa (W, 9-3), giving the bottom of the order a chance to score or maybe even tie the game. However, Corey Zangari popped out in foul ground to the first baseman on the first pitch of his at-bat and Camilo Quinteiro grounded out to third to end the inning.
Long finished his 5.0 innings of work strong for Kannapolis, striking out two batters in the fourth and fifth frames to give the Intimidators a chance against a talented Greensboro team. However, the Grasshoppers did not fold.
Manasa tossed 6.0 brilliant innings, only allowing three hits, while punching out eight batters on just 79 pitches. Cody Smith (H, 6) and Yerry De Los Santos (S, 11) both threw well in relief of Manasa, as De Los Santos recorded two strikeouts and gave up just one hit over the last two innings at Intimidators Stadium.
Devon Perez pitched a solid 2.0 innings for manager Ryan Newman and the Intimidators, striking out four batters. Declan Cronin and Austin Conway did not allow a hit for the Grasshoppers in the eighth or ninth innings, striking out a combined three batters.
The Intimidators will send Davis Martin (6-8, 5.36 ERA) to the mound against Will Kobos (1-1, 2.57 ERA) of the Grasshoppers Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
