KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Despite dropping the first game of the double header 3-1 Saturday night, the Intimidators topped the Shorebirds 8-4 in game two of the double dip, scoring in five of the seven innings at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
Game 1
With RHP Kade McClure (L, 1-2) and LHP Nick Vespi (W, 2-2) both working quick innings in the first two innings of action, the Shorebirds got the scoring in the third against McClure. Thanks to a single from Seamus Curran and a double from Robbie Thorburn, Cadyn Grenier brought both runners in to score to give Delmarva an early 2-0 lead.
After working two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth innings, McClure allowed a triple (3) to Doran Turchin with two outs in the sixth, bring up Nick Horvath. On a 2-2 pitch, Horvath smoked a ball to third base that bounced off the chest of Luis Curbelo, allowing Turchin to come in to score the third run of the ball game for Delmarva.
After McClure struck out the side in the seventh inning, Luis Curbelo collected his second hit of the night with an infield single to third base. Following a strikeout to Amado Nunez for the second out of the inning, Michael Hickman collected his first hit of the night, as Johan Cruz singled on a ground ball into left field to score Curbelo for the Intimidators' first run.
With a pitching change and single from Ian Dawkins after Cruz's single, Lenyn Sosa grounded out to third to end the ball game to leave two runners stranded for Kannapolis and end the game.
McClure finished the night with seven strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game despite the loss.
Game 2
Kannapolis got on the board early in the first inning, as Dawkins and Sosa both reach in the bottom of the inning on singles to put runners at first and second for the home team.
After a strikeout to Romy Gonzalez, starter Ryan Wilson for Delmarva tossed a live ball into the Intimidators dugout, looking for a fresh baseball to be thrown to him from the umpire. But with the home plate umpire not giving Wilson time, Wilson was charged with an unfortunate two-base error, allowing Dawkins to score and Sosa to move to third.
Next up, Alex Destino doubled (5) on a ball to center field, scoring Sosa to give the Intimidators a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the second inning, Johan Cruz cranked his first home run as an Intimidator to left-center field, increasing the lead to three.
In the third, the Shorebirds scored four runs to take the lead on four hits and on Kannapolis error, creating an early exit to Kannapolis starter Wilber Perez. In the bottom of the third, Gonzalez walked to lead off the inning, followed by a Destino triple (2) to center field, helping tie the game, 4-4.
Three batters later, after a groundout and strikeout, Cruz collected his second hit of the game with a single to left field, helping give Kannapolis a 5-4 lead through three innings.
After a clean inning from RHP Jason Bilous (W, 2-1) in the fourth, Dawkins hit a double (14) on a line drive to left field, scoring Travis Moniot who reached on a single a batter prior. Up 6-4, Dawkins stole third and scored a few pitches later thanks to a Gonzalez sacrifice fly to deep center, giving Kannapolis a three-run lead.
In the fifth, Beltre tripled (4) on a ball to straight-away center, using a sacrifice fly off the bat of Curbelo to score the Intimidators' eighth and final run of the ball game.
Kannapolis will host the fourth game of the series Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health, as RHP Jonathan Stiever will get the ball against Delmarva's RHP Ofelky Peralta.
