Game 1: Rigler delivers gem in Game 1 of the double header
The Kannapolis Intimidators (27-14) rode the coattail of Parker Rigler through the first five innings of the first game of the double header Sunday afternoon at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health, as the left-handed pitcher only allowed two hits, while striking out four Hickory batters.
Leading off the inning in the second, Anthony Villa got ahold of a 1-1 pitch from Hickory's Jean Casanova (L, 1-3), hitting his first home run of the season to right field, giving the Intimidators a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Justin Yurchak reached on a double that knocked off the glove of Tyreque Reed at first base, putting a runner in scoring position for Michael Hickman.
After a groundout to second base for Hickman that sent Yurchak to third, Johan Cruz grounded out to shortstop Christian Inoa, scoring Yurchak to give the I's a 2-0 lead.
Fast forward two innings to the fourth, the 'Dads' (14-24) catcher Yohel Pozo smacked his fourth homer of the season to left field off Rigler (W, 2-1), with the homer proving to be one of only two hits that the southpaw surrendered through 5.0 innings.
With the game shortened to seven innings due to it being a double header, Robbie Ross Jr. (S, 1) got the call out of the bullpen in the sixth, sitting down the first three batters he saw, sending the game into the seventh with a one-run Kannapolis lead. In the seventh, the southpaw worked around a walk and a double, getting a pop out and a ground out to end the Hickory threat and earn his first save
With the win, the Intimidators move a full game up on Delmarva for first place in the Northern division of the South Atlantic League.
Game 2: Rain delay in second game of double header
In game two of the double header, both teams came out red hot at the plate, scoring in pairs throughout most of the game. The Intimidators got the scoring going in the second as Evan Skoug smacked a line drive single up the middle, moving up another 90 the very next pitch after a wild pitch from Derek Heffel. Up in the count 2-0, Yurchak roped a triple down the left field line, his first of the season, scoring Skoug from second. One batter later, Carlos Pèrez hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Yurchak to give the I's a 2-0 lead.
After a two-run home run off the bat of Tryeque reed, the Intimidators capitalized on two singles from Nolan Brown and Luis Gonzalez who later scored after a single up the middle off the bat of Tate Blackman.
Up 4-2 in the fourth, Luis Ledo gave up a three-run blast to Ryan Dorow for his fourth homer of the season, scoring Tyler Ratliff and Clay Middleton to give the 'Dads a 5-4 lead through four innings.
Kannapolis responded in the fifth after a 1-2-3 inning for Cameron Seitzer on the mound, scoring the tying run on a Blackman sharp ground ball through the left side that score Laz Rivera.
With dark skies covering the field in the bottom of the sixth with one out and Tyler Frost at the plate, the umpires took everyone off the field, suspending the game until the two teams meet in Hickory in a few weeks.
