KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Behind a five-run fifth inning for the Lexington Legends, the Intimidators dropped the Thursday night rubber match in Kannapolis 6-1.
Davis Martin (L, 3-3) got the start on the bump for Kannapolis and threw four scoreless innings until a fifth inning where four hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch led to five Lexington runs.
During the first four innings, three baserunning mistakes prevented Kannapolis' first run from coming across. But, in bottom of the fifth, a pop up that fell in for a double from Travis Moniot scored Ramon Beltre for Kannapolis to bring the score to 5-1.
Martin finished his day with a final line of 6.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, and 3 K and was credited with the loss to bring his record to 3-3.
Relieving Martin was Jason Bilous, Andrew Perez and Bennett Sousa. Bilous and Perez pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, respectively. Sousa ran into some trouble in the top of the ninth when a dropped third strike throw to first allowed Rubendy Jaquez to score from third to extend Lexington's lead to 6-1.
Kannapolis couldn't generate much of a late-game rally in the bottom of the ninth and fell 6-1 on the night, thusly losing the rubber match as well.
The Intimidators will continue their homestand Friday night with a series against the first place Delmarva Shorebirds, with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m.
