Royce Lewis joins Kernels from GCL Twins

#1 overall pick from 2017 First Year Player Draft

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that INF Royce Lewis, the first overall pick in the 2017 First Year Player Draft, will join the Kernels from the GCL Twins. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.

This is the first time in the history of the Kernels that the first overall pick from the First Year Player Draft has played for the Kernels. Lewis was selected out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA and has played 36 games with the GCL Twins, batting .271 (36-133) with 3 HR and 17 RBI.

Lewis is active and available for tonight's 6:35 PM game with Quad Cities. With today's transaction, the Kernels roster is at the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players, with six players currently on the DL and one player currently on the military leave list.

The Kernels continue a four-game home stand tonight at 6:35 PM against the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the Houston Astros. The upcoming home stand continues through Sunday, August 13th.
