Shibuya shuts out Clinton

Tim Shibuya pitched all nine innings in a 5-0 win over the LumberKings.

CLINTON, Iowa - Tim Shibuya shut out the Clinton LumberKings on Saturday night as he went nine innings in a 5-0 Kernels win.

Shibuya (4-0) went all nine innings and allowed no runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked one for the complete-game, shutout victory. At one point he retired 16 LumberKings in a row.

The Kernels jumped in front of the LumberKings with a run in the top of the first inning. Jonathan Murphy and Tyler Grimes started the frame with back to back singles. Max Kepler later scored Murphy with a RBI sacrifice fly, putting the Kernels up 1-0.

Murphy scored again to put the Kernels ahead 2-0 in the third inning. He tripled to right-center to begin the inning and came home on a RBI single by Grimes.

Mike Gonzales launched a solo home run to deep right field in the fourth inning, extending the Kernels lead to 3-0. It was the fifth of the season for Gonzales.

The Kernels pushed their lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning. Jorge Polanco started the inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Then, Bo Altobelli's two-out, RBI single to left field plated Polanco.

The Kernels added a run in the ninth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Travis Harrison led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a throwing error by LumberKings first baseman Taylor Ard.

David Holman (4-8) went eight innings for the Clinton loss. He allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out one and walking one.
