WILMINGTON, DE -The Wilmington Blue Rocks earned a doubleheader sweep of the Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. In game one the Blue Crew tied their season-high for runs scored in a 10-2 victory over the orange and black before the Rocks took game two 3-1. With the doubleheader setback, the Keys also suffer their first sweep of the year.
The Blue Rocks took control early in game one, scoring three times against Cristian Alvarado in the bottom of the first. Nicky Lopez and D.J Burt opened the game with base hits, before Anderson Miller brought the former home with a single to center. An error on a snap throw to third by Keys catcher Stuart Levy plated the second run, while a double by Chris Devito and a sac-fly by Chase Vallot made it a 3-1 contest.
Wilmington batted around in the third, adding four more runs. In the inning, the first four reached against Alvarado (2-3). With men at first and second, Devito added an RBI single to right before base knocks by Vallot and Travis Maezes knocked the Keys starter out of the game. Lopez completed the scoring with his second single of the game.
Frederick got single markers in the first and fifth innings against Foster Griffin. Following a double by Stevie Wilkerson and a single by Ryan Mountcastle , Randolph Gassaway lifted a sac-fly to give the Keys the initial run of the contest. The Keys also added a run in the fifth on a Gassaway single which plated Mountcastle from second.
Griffin (3-2) earned the win, tossing five innings of two-run baseball. He walked three and struck out six while allowing seven hits. Alvarado suffered the loss, lasting only 2.1 innings. The right-hander was tagged for seven runs on eight hits.
In game two, the Keys acted first once again. Wilkerson opened the game with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on sac-fly by Mountcastle. That was the only run allowed by Blue Rocks starter, Jared Ruxer. Making his first start with the Blue Rocks, he delivered five innings and allowed one run on five hits to earn his third win of the year.
Keys starter Brian Gonzalez needed just 31 pitches to complete his first three innings, but allowed a pair of runs in the fourth. Miller opened the inning with a single, scooted to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a groundout. He eventually scored on a sac-fly by Cody Jones. Wilmington added one more run on an additional wild pitch which scored Wander Franco.
Miller gave the Blue Rocks a two-run cushion with a sixth inning homer off Gonzalez (4-3). The southpaw went the distance for the Keys but suffered the loss. Over six innings, Gonzalez gave up three runs on four hits.
The Keys continue their roadtrip on Monday night when they visit the Salem Red Sox at Haley Toyota Field.
