Keys starter Zach Davies was phenomenal, scattering three hits in seven stellar scoreless innings, but it was not enough. Carolina rallied from two runs down to tie the game in the eighth inning and finished off the Keys in the ninth. Frederick fell 3-2.
Davies 80-pitch effort included a run of five consecutive strikeouts. He did not allow more than one runner to reach in any inning. His final out of the game finished the seventh inning with the game still scoreless.
The Keys left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings but got to Carolina in the eighth inning. 3B Nicky Delmonico, with Pena aboard and nobody out, hit a soaring home run to right field to give the Keys a 2-0 lead. The blast was his team-leading 12th of the season.
Miguel Chalas entered with the two-run lead but had his second consecutive rocky outing. Chalas allowed two runs on three hits to tie the game in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Mudcats DH Bo Greenwell singled, stole second and scored the winning run on LF Luigi Rodriguez's game-winning double down the left field line.
The loss drops the Keys to 1-3 in the second half. Dating back to the first half the Keys have lost six-consecutive one-run games and have dropped 12 of their last 15 games.
