Frederick Plated Eight Runs on 12 Hits in Series Opener

LYNCHBURG, VA - In front of an impressive crowd of 5,962, the Keys celebrated Independence Day in style with a five-run victory over the Hillcats. Michael Ohlman blasted a three-run home run in the top of the third inning off LHP Blaine Sims and the Keys never looked back. Frederick plated seven runs off the Lynchburg starter. Making his fifth start with the Keys, RHP Brady Wager notched his first Carolina League victory. Wager matched a career-high with seven innings of work on the night. 1B Christian Walker finished the night with three doubles and 3B Jason Esposito drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

Following a scoreless first inning, Christian Walker led off the top of the second with a double to right-center. After an Allan de San Miguel ground out advanced Walker to third, Jason Esposito singled through the right side of the infield to bring home the game's first run.

The Hillcats responded with a run off Wager in the bottom of the second.

With the score tied at one, the Keys plated four runs in third inning including three on one swing of the bat. Reigning Carolina League Player of the Week Michael Ohlman stepped to the plate with one out and men on the corners. Ohlman blasted a three-run home run to left field to put Frederick in front 4-1. Ohlman's fourth home run in six games gave the Keys a lead they would not relinquish. Frederick plated another run in the third on a fielding error by 3B Kyle Kubitza.

Johnny Ruettiger drove in a run in the fourth inning and Jason Esposito hit a sac fly in the fifth inning bringing home the final run against Hillcats' starter Blaine Sims. Over five innings, Sims allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits.

In his fifth start with the Keys, Brady Wager (1-3) notched his first Carolina League victory. Wager allowed three runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. Wager struck out four and walked one on the night. LHP Zach Fowler closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief.  

The Keys and Hillcats will play game two of the three game series on Friday night in Lynchburg. RHP Zach Davies (4-3, 3.44) will take the hill for Frederick while the Hillcats will turn to RHP A.J. Holland (4-4, 4.37). First pitch from Calvin Falwell Field is set for 7:05 p.m. with coverage beginning on 1450 AM The Source at 6:30 p.m. with the Frederick Gorilla Pregame Show.
