BUIES CREEK, NC-The Buies Creek Astros (51-39/14-6) scored five times in the second and limited the Frederick Keys (37-50/6-12) to just two hits in an 8-2 victory on Wednesday night at Jim Perry Stadium. With the setback, the Keys have now lost 13 consecutive road games.
Frederick plated the first run in the second on a wild pitch, but the Astros responded with five of their own while sending eight men to bat. Stephen Wrenn scored first on a wild pitch by Ofelky Peralta , while Alex De Goti added an RBI double to make it 2-1 Buies Creek. One batter later, Myles Straw singled in two more before Ryne Birk concluded the scoring with an RBI single.
That was plenty of support for Hector Perez who held the Keys to only one hit in five innings. Despite walking four, the right-hander struck out five. It was the second win for Perez (4-3) against the Keys, while in 11.2 innings against Frederick he has allowed only one run on two hits.
Peralta (2-8) suffered the loss for Frederick surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out three. The 20-year-old has received a decision in eight straight outings (six losses).
Buies Creek added three more runs in the fourth. With two on and two out, Birk doubled home Spencer Johnson, while two batters later, Jake Rogers added a two-run single. Birk tied his season-high with four hits, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
An error by third baseman Randy Cesar allowed the Keys to score one additional run in the eighth, but the two hits equaled a season-low. Frederick was also limited to two hits by the Astros on May 28 (the first time Perez started against the Keys).
The Keys and Astros continue their series on Thursday night. Left-hander Keegan Akin (6-6, 3.47) starts for Frederick and will be opposed by Buies Creek left-hander Matt Bower (3-4, 6.16). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m from Jim Perry Stadium and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
Frederick returns home on July 20th for a four-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Homestand highlights include two nights of fireworks along with "Home Improvement" Night on the 22nd with an appearance from Richard Karn, who played Al Borland on the hit T.V. show.
