Keys starter Brady Wager could not wiggle out of consecutive jams as Salem jumped out to a big early lead in a 10-1 win over the Keys Thursday night. With the victory, Salem earned a post-season berth in the upcoming Carolina League Playoffs.
Frederick had opportunities early getting the leadoff man in each of the first two innings but double plays derailed potential rallies. Salem grabbed the lead with a run in the second inning but Wager minimized the damage as the Red Sox left the bases loaded.
Wager could not tip-toe out of trouble in the following inning. With one out, Salem pushed six consecutive batters on base. The resulting rally plated four runs. Salem added four more in the fourth inning as 1B Matt Gedman doubled for a third consecutive at-bat to drive in a run. That was followed by DH David Chester's two-run home run to push the Salem lead to 9-0.
Frederick's bullpen was again very steady as Jesse Beal, Gene Escat and Matt Price combined to allow only one run in the game's last four and one/third innings. C Allan de San Miguel had two hits in the game and SS Sammie Starr drove home a run with a single in the ninth inning.
