FREDERICK, MD-The Frederick Keys (30-36) used a pair of fifth inning home runs to defeat the Lynchburg Hillcats (38-28) 3-1 on Friday night at Nymeo Field. The win ended a season-worst seven-game losing streak for the Keys.
After going the previous 26 and one-third of an inning without a run, the Keys got on the board in a big way in the fifth. Yermin Mercedes recorded the first hit for the Keys, and Alex Murphy followed with a two-run blast off of Brock Hartson. Armando Araiza followed two batters later with a solo shot of his own to left field, and the Keys took a 3-0 lead.
The Hillcats got a run back in the ninth inning. Sicnarf Loopstok led off the inning with a single, and would come around to score on a Yonathan Mendoza single off of Tanner Chleborad . With runners at the corner, Chleborad struck out Claudio Bautista to record his team-leading sixth save.
Keegan Akin (5-4) earned the win for the Keys, tossing five innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits. Luis Gonzalez tossed 3 perfect innings of relief. Hartson (2-3) took the loss for the Hillcats.
Frederick and Lynchburg continue their series on Friday night. The Keys will send right-hander Cody Sedlock (4-4, 6.10) to the mound to face Hillcats right-hander Shane Bieber. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m, and can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
