ZEBULON, NC - The Frederick Keys (4-5) used a three RBI game from Randolph Gassaway to beat the Carolina Mudcats (5-4) 5-1 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Gassaway went 3-for-4 while hitting his first home run of the season.
After Austin Hays walked in the first inning, Ryan Mountcastle roped a double down the left field line, scoring Hays and giving the Keys a 1-0 lead. Mountcastle advanced to third base on the throw home. Gassaway then ripped the first pitch he saw into left field, scoring Mountcastle and pushing the lead to two.
The left fielder was not done yet. With one out and Mountcastle at first, Gassaway crushed a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left center field off Mudcats starter Freddy Peralta. The blast put the Keys up 4-0, and gave Gassaway his second and third RBIs of the night.
Carolina would get a run back in the fourth inning. With two outs, Keys starter Cristian Alvarado (1-1) issued two walks and allowed a single to load the bases. The righty then hit Troy Stokes, Jr. with the first pitch, bringing in Isan Diaz. Alvarado would strand the bases loaded, however, with a strikeout of Max McDowell, to keep it a 4-1 Keys edge.
Frederick added an insurance run in the ninth on a Stevie Wilkerson base hit to left field, scoring Yermin Mercedes. After recording the final out of the eighth inning, Tanner Chleborad got the last three outs in the ninth, securing the 5-1 win and earning his first save of the season.
In earning his first Carolina League win, Alvarado pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out six. He joins Cody Sedlock as the only Keys starters to make a quality start this year.
Despite a nine-strikeout effort, Peralta (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Peralta and Marcos Diplan combined to strike out 15 Keys batters, the most by the Keys offense in a game this year.
The Keys look to win their first series of the year on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Ofelky Peralta (0-0, 2.25) makes the start for the Keys. He will be going up against Conor Harber (0-1, 5.40) for the Mudcats. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App. The Keys return to Nymeo Field on Thursday, April 20 when the Salem Red Sox come to town.
