Brady Wager threw his first professional complete game and the Keys used a second-inning rally to defeat Carolina 2-0 on Saturday evening. Wager's dominant effort was the first nine-inning complete game shutout for a Key since Nick Haughian did so on July 23rd, 2011 against Myrtle Beach.
Wager was in trouble just once in the game. In the first inning, with runners at the corners and one out Mudcats 3B Paddy Matera hit a chopper to 3B Jason Esposito's left. He slid to glove, threw to second base where 2B Jerome Pena made a beautiful turn of the double play. Carolina never again had a runner in scoring position.
All-in-all, Wager punished the strike zone with his sinker, getting 13 ground ball outs. He retired the last 18 batters in the game and finished with 97 pitches thrown.
The Keys scored their two runs in the second inning. DH Zane Chavez singled and was at second base with two down when Esposito lined a base hit to right field to score Chavez. A batter later 1B Mike Mosby smoked a double to left-center field scoring Esposito. Mosby, who doubled twice in the game, was thrown out trying to extend the base hit to a triple to end the inning.
