The Kingsport Mets earned a big win and kept pace in the Appalachian League West playoff push with a 7-4 victory over the Greeneville Reds Tuesday night at a rainy Hunter Wright Stadium.
The Mets got the scoring started early with runs in both of the first two frames.
Luis Santana opened the scoring with a two-out RBI-single in the first to give Kingsport the lead.
The Mets plated a pair in the second, first with a solo home run by Mark Vientos, and then a RBI-single by Ranfy Adon pushing the advantage out to three.
Greeneville and Kingsport traded two-run frames in the fourth and fifth, with the Reds plating a pair in the fourth and the Mets doing the same in the fifth.
Kingsport's runs came on a RBI-ground out by Jarred Kelenic and a run scoring double by Shervyen Newton, one of his three hits on the evening.
The Reds scored a pair in the sixth to keep cut the Mets' advantage to 5-4, and appeared ready to take the lead in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs.
However, Andrew Mitchell came out of the bullpen to induce a ground ball to Newton to end the frame.
The Mets got some insurance in the eighth, as Ranfy Adon laid down a perfect bunt with a man on. Two errors later, the base runner Phil Capra, and Adon both scored.
Mitchell tossed a perfect ninth to lock down the save, make a winner of Dedniel Nunez, and earn the K-Mets their 20th win of the season.
The Mets and Reds will continue their series tomorrow night at Hunter Wright Stadium. Game time is set for 6:30.
W: Dedniel Nunez (2-1)
L: Lyon Richardson (0-4)
S: Andrew Mitchell (2)
