(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- With one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the country, the Charlotte Knights are pleased to announce the team will become the Charlotte Caballeros later this season from August 18-20. The announcement, along with a logo unveiling, and a sneak peek at the on-field uniforms, took place during a press conference at BB&T Ballpark earlier today.
"We are very excited to introduce the Charlotte Caballeros," stated Charlotte Knights General Manager Rob Egan. "Fans will notice the Caballeros' name and associated themes integrated in their experience at BB&T Ballpark and out in the community."
Gates will open at 6:00p.m. on Friday, August 18th and first pitch against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs is set for 7:05 p.m. as the Caballeros take the field for the very first time in BB&T Ballpark history. The Caballeros and IronPigs will face off again on Saturday, August 19th with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. One day later, on Sunday, August 20th, the Knights and IronPigs will conclude their series with a 5:05 p.m. game from BB&T Ballpark. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. on August 20th and the Knights will also hold "Faith and Family Night" at the ballpark courtesy of Montreat College. The three-day event at BB&T Ballpark will feature a number of unique concessions items, a festival, and much more.
Egan added, "In the ballpark, we'll feature special concession items, public address announcements in Spanish, player features on the video board, and a festival with live music during our introductory weekend of August 18-20. In the community, we'll be strengthening our bond with the Latin American Chamber of Commerce Charlotte (LACCC) and the Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Charlotte (PRCSC), as well as volunteering our time and raising funds for Circle de Luz -- a group whose mission is to empower Hispanic girls and young women through mentoring, programming, and educational scholarships. The Caballeros look forward to making an impact immediately and long into the future in Charlotte."
Representatives from the LACCC, PRCSC, and Circle de Luz participated in today's announcement of the Caballeros
Throughout the season, the Knights have partnered with Norsan Media to air all Sunday home games in Spanish on 102.3 FM. Broadcasters Rafael Bastidas and Ernesto Hurtado call the games from the Charlotte Knights press box. There are four Spanish-language broadcasts remaining on the schedule: July 30th, August 6th and 20th, and September 3. The August 20th game will take on special meaning as part of Caballeros' weekend. Bastidas and Hurtado were also present at Monday's announcement.
Beginning today, the team will be taking pre-orders for all Charlotte Caballeros merchandise, which will arrive at the Knights Armor Shoppe in August. New Era on-field fitted hats are available online for pre-orders starting today at $28. Additionally, T-shirts with the Caballeros logo are also available for pre-order at just $20. Fans will also have a chance to own the one-of-a-kind, game-worn Caballeros' jerseys through an online auction on August 20th with proceeds to benefit Circle de Luz.
