Cleto Promoted to Chicago Monday

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - RHP Maikel Cleto (pronounced Michael CLAY-toe), who hasn't allowed a run in his last five appearances (7.2 innings), had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox today, as announced by the White Sox. Cleto, 25, compiled a 3-0 record with three saves and a 5.91 ERA in 22 games for the Knights this season. He will take the roster spot of RHP Taylor Thompson, who was optioned back to the Knights after Sunday's White Sox game.

Cleto becomes the 13th Knights player to go from Charlotte to Chicago this year. RHP Jake Petricka (April 4), outfielder Jordan Danks (April 10), RHP Zach Putnam (April 17), RHP Andre Rienzo (April 19), LHP Charlie Leesman (April 22), RHP Scott Carroll (April 27), LHP Frank De Los Santos (May 3), RHP Frank Francisco (May 10), RHP Javy Guerra (May 20), LHP Eric Surkamp (June 26), infielder Carlos Sanchez (July 13), and RHP Taylor Thompson (July 20) are the other 12 players that have earned promotions in 2014.

A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Cleto was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on February 26 and began the 2014 campaign with the White Sox. He went 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA in 13 games before being designated for assignment by Chicago on May 10. He was outrighted to Charlotte on May 12. Cleto has 50 strikeouts in 35.0 IP this season with the Knights.

Thompson earned his first-ever promotion to the majors on July 20 and appeared in five games for the White Sox. The Montgomery, AL native posted a 0-0 mark with a 10.13 ERA for Chicago. For the Knights, Thompson has been one of the most effective pitchers in the International League this season. The 27-year-old is 2-0 with six saves and a 2.61 ERA in 31 games for Charlotte this year. He posted a 1-0 record with a 0.61 ERA in nine appearances in May.

The Knights will open a two-game series with the Gwinnett Braves from BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. game. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the Knights will welcome over 20 former Charlotte Hornets baseball players to the game for a special Charlotte Hornets Tribute. Charlie Manuel, Minnie Mendoza, and many others will be on hand for a special pre-game ceremony. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Hornets Tribute poster and it's also Twitter Tuesday, presented by BB&T.
