Captains fall short against Whitecaps

(Comstock Park, MI) – The Lake County Captains (11-11) came up just short on Friday in a 2-1 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (12-9) at LMCU Ballpark. The loss extends the Captains’ losing streak to a season-high four games.

(Comstock Park, MI) – The Lake County Captains (11-11) came up just short on Friday in a 2-1 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (12-9) at LMCU Ballpark. The loss extends the Captains’ losing streak to a season-high four games.

The Whitecaps scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eric de la Rosa started the inning by hitting a ground ball to third base that was bobbled by Victor Nova, allowing de la Rosa to reach. Dillon Dingler followed by launching a two-run home run to left field to give West Michigan a 2-0 lead.

Lake County struck back in the top of the seventh. A one-out single by Daniel Schneemann started the rally. With two outs José Tena ripped a double to center field that plated Schneemann to make the score 2-1, Whitecaps.

In the eighth inning the Captains threatened to tie the game against Whitecaps’ reliever Yaya Chentouf. After Raynel Delgado singled, he stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs Chentouf walked Nova to put runners on the corners. Mike Amditis came to the plate looking to tie the game but Chentouf struck him out to escape the jam.

Tanner Burns (0-2) battled through five innings on the mound for Lake County. The Whitecaps scored two runs off of Burns but only one was earned. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four.

Keider Montero (1-3) spun five scoreless innings in his best start of the season to earn the win. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five.

Zach Hess (2) tossed a clean ninth inning to earn the save for West Michigan.

Left-hander Matt Turner gets the start for the Captains in game five of the six-game series on Saturday night. First pitch at LMCU Ballpark is set for 6:35 p.m.
