Captains swept by Whitecaps

(Comstock Park, MI) – The Lake County Captains (11-13) dropped their sixth straight game to the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-9) 7-1 on Sunday from LMCU Ballpark.

(Comstock Park, MI) – The Lake County Captains (11-13) dropped their sixth straight game to the West Michigan Whitecaps (13-9) 7-1 on Sunday from LMCU Ballpark.

The Whitecaps got on the scoreboard with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Eric de la Rosa reached to start the frame on an error by Raynel Delgado at third base. After a strikeout of Spencer Torkelson, Daniel Cabrera singled to put runners on the corners. Dillon Dingler followed by hitting a ground ball to third base that Delgado fielded and caught de la Rosa in a rundown. Cabrera advanced to third base and Dingler got to second before the Captains could tag de la Rosa. Andre Lipcius drew a walk to load the bases and Eliezer Alfonso drove home Cabrera and Dingler to give the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second both Trevin Esquerra and Torkelson walked to put two runners on with two outs. Cabrera came to the plate and hit a high fly ball that cleared the wall in right field for a home run to make the score 5-0, Whitecaps.

West Michigan tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cabrera led off the inning with a soft single to left field. With Cabrera on second, Dingler connected on a fastball and sent it over the wall in center field for a home run to extend the Whitecaps lead to 7-0.

The Captains attempted to rally in the top of the ninth. José Tena and Brayan Rocchio both singled to start the inning, and Joe Naranjo walked to load the bases. With one out Daniel Schneemann grounded out to first base for the second out but the Whitecaps conceded a run with Tena trotting home from third to make the score 7-1, Whitecaps. Raynel Delgado flew out to center field to end the comeback attempt from Lake County.

Chance Kirby (2-1) dominated on the mound in his six innings of work to earn the win. He allowed one hit, one walk and struck out five.

M**ason Hickman** (1-2) lasted two innings for the Captains on Sunday and took the loss. He allowed five runs, three were earned on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts.

The Captains return home on Tuesday for a six-game series against the Dayton Dragons. Classic Park returns to full capacity beginning on Wednesday, June 2. More information about changes in protocols and the return to full capacity can be found here.
