LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - For the second consecutive season, the Eyes of the Storm will be represented on the big stage. Star outfielder Buddy Reed has been selected to play for the United States in this year's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, to be played in our nation's capital on Sunday, July 15th at Nationals Park.
"It's an honor and a blessing and I'm happy to represent the San Diego Padres," said Reed. "My parents are coming. I just want them there. They're the most important people in my life and it'll be awesome to see them there."
After being selected by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2016 out of the University of Florida, Reed had spent his first two professional seasons with Tri-City and Fort Wayne before breakthrough campaign this season in Lake Elsinore.
Through just 77 games in the California League, the Bronx, NY native and former prep hockey standout has set new career highs in several offensive categories, including runs (51), hits (98), total bases (162), doubles (21), home runs (11), RBIs (45), walks (24), stolen bases (33), average (.319), on-base percentage (.368) and slugging percentage (.528).
Reed was named California League Player of the Month in April and was a California League All-Star selection, where he batted leadoff for the South Division.
He will be joined by fellow Padres prospects Luis Urías and Fernando Tatis Jr., both of whom will play for the International Team and are regarded to be San Diego's future middle infield.
"I reached out to Tatis and tagged them both an in Instagram post. I'm excited to see both of those guys and create new relationships with the guys I meet in DC."
Urias was named California League MVP in 2016 after hitting .330 with 36 extra-base hits and 52 RBIs in 120 games with the Lake Elsinore Storm. He is considered the Padres No. 3 ranked prospect and the No. 29 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Tatis Jr. is considered the top prospect in the Padres system and the No. 3 prospect in baseball.
Representing Lake Elsinore and the Padres at last year's Futures Game were Canadians Cal Quantrill and Josh Naylor. Quantrill, a right-handed pitcher and Stanford product, is the Padres No. 4 prospect and comes in at the No. 32 spot overall. He's currently with the Double-A San Antonio Missions with Naylor, who's hitting .313 with 12 home runs through 81 games. Naylor is considered a Top 10 first baseman and the No. 14 ranked prospect in the Padres system.
