Lakeland, FL - Matt Manning struck out eight over five innings and Brock Deatherage knocked two extra-base hits in his High-A debut to vanquish the villainous Fire Frogs by a score of 5-1 on Super Hero Night.

Florida starting pitcher Connor Johnstone and Manning both faced trouble in the first inning. Three straight singles to open the game by Drew Waters, Riley Delgado, and CJ Alexander Jr. gave the Fire Frogs an early 1-0 lead. The Flying Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple from Brock Deatherage in his first Florida State League at-bat. Jose Azocar followed with an RBI single that gave the Flying Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Despite battling a high pitch count, Manning did not allow a hit over his final four innings, amassing eight strikeouts along the way. Dejá vu struck again in the sixth when Azocar singled in Deatherage to increase the lead to 3-1. The Flying Tigers added two more in the eighth when Chad Sedio scored on a fielder's choice and Deatherage scored on a single by AJ Simcox.
Burris Warner, Wladimir Pinto, and Drew Carlton combined for four scoreless innings of relief to preserve the 5-1 win. With the Clearwater Threshers loss today, the Flying Tigers now sit in second place in the Florida State League North Division, three games behind Clearwater.
Up Next: Detroit Tigers ace Michael Fulmer is scheduled to make his second rehab appearance for the Flying Tigers against Huascar Ynoa (1-2, 9.00 ERA) and the Florida Fire Frogs on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. In his first rehab appearance on Tuesday, Fulmer struck out four and did not allow a hit over two innings of work.
